Caernarfon Tournament 280614

Caernarfon Tournament – 28/06/14

The U12s were drawn in group A against Llanfair PG, Cae Glyn Utd, Bontnewydd, Bethel and Pwllheli Utd.

The first game was against Bethel and Llangoed FC started the game better than any tournament match they’ve played so far. Within 4 minutes, they were 2-0 up. The first was by Matthew who popped up in the area at just the right time to slide the ball into the back of the Bethel net. The second goal was a surefire winner of goal of the tournament by Lewis. Spotting the Bethel goalkeeper off his line, his shot from inside his own half looped up and over the keeper and into the back of the net. Llangoed took their foot off the gas for the rest of the game and despite a couple of good Llangoed chances, the game finished 2-0 to Llangoed FC.

The next game was against Bontnewydd who had made several changes to the side Llangoed last met in the Llanfair tournament. The game was a cagey affair and there were no clear cut chances at either end. The match finished 0-0.

Game 3 saw Llangoed up against Llanfair PG. Llangoed were uncharacteristically subdued, possibly due to the comedown from a massive sugar rush from the sweets they all shovelled down their necks in the interval. Llanfair broke the deadlock with a great passing move which ended with Llanfair’s diminutive number 9 slotting the ball past Sean for the lead. Despite some vocal support from the sidelines, Llangoed were unable to get a foothold in the game and it finished 1-0 to Llanfair. We will beat these guys one day!

Game 4, against Pwllheli was a must-win for Llangoed as there were 3 other teams level on points and the leaders were 2 points ahead. To say Pwllheli were a physical side would be being charitable. The side from the Lleyn went ahead thanks to a rare defensive error which saw their number 10 clear through to stroke the ball past Sean. The Llangoed team had several strong appeals for free kicks denied and when Josh was blatantly brought down in Pwllheli’s penalty area, the referee said “Penalty” only to change his mind (and give a drop ball???) when the Pwllheli manager had a go at him. The game finished 1-0 to Pwllheli.

Llangoed were looking down and out and still had to face Cae Glyn Utd and not even the bottles of dodgy blue pop that were being swigged could pep them up. Cae Glyn had managed to pick up a few points and were hoping to get through to the play offs with a win against us. The coaches had spoken to the lads about passing the ball better and they looked to have taken it on board against a team of much bigger lads because Llangoed played a blinder. Some excellent passing play left Ben open on goal and he took his chance cleanly putting the ball past the keeper into the top right hand corner of the net. An almost identical piece of passing saw Llangoed double their lead with Ben the scorer again, this time firing the ball through a group of defenders and into the net. The game became quite scrappy after this with Cae Glyn employing some decidedly dodgy tactics resulting in first Lewis needing treatment then Sam and Shaun both being winded in seperate incidents which the referee said were fair tackles. Cae Glyn managed to get one goal back but the game finished 2-1 to Llangoed.

Llangoed finished the group in 3rd place with 7 points just outside of a playoff place. If they can play like they did in the first and last games at Bethesda next week then they could be in with a good chance. Well done today lads.
