Amlwch 1 – 6 Llangoed
Cai Jones (3), Aaron Evans, Thomas Zalot, Kieran Owen
Llangoed travelled to Amlwch on a beautiful January morning to play their second game in the Jimmy Lawlor Memorial Cup. The lads were on a high having despatched Holyhead at home the previous week and were looking to make it 2 out of 2 against a good Amlwch side who were currently sitting third in the league.
We were playing at the leisure centre pitch which was in good condition despite the recent bad weather. We didn’t have a referee allocated by the league for this game so Amlwch had provided one.
The game kicked off and both teams were quick out of the gates with some strong tackling from both sides. The first five minutes were played in midfield with Sam and Josh battling hard and neither goalkeeper being tested. Eventually Llangoed settled into a rhythm and were making some good chances which were narrowly missed. About 20 minutes in, Amlwch failed to clear a Llangoed corner and after an agonising scrabble in the goalmouth Cai poked it into the back of the net to put Llangoed 1-0 ahead.
Amlwch are a good side and did not let this phase them and they set about trying to level the score forcing Shaun into a couple of excellent saves and could have levelled if not for the solid defending of Paddy, Tomos, Lewis and Alfie. Amlwch were looking increasingly comfortable in possession when Alfie dispossessed their forward and hammered the ball long to Aaron who flicked the ball through to Cai who took it well on the edge of the area and fired the ball to the Amlwch keeper’s left to make it 2-0 to Llangoed going into the half time break.
Llangoed came out after the break with all guns blazing and it wasn’t long before Cai was on target again with a wonderfully struck half volley after some good work by Ben to get his hat trick. Minutes later, Cai was clear through on goal when he was brought down from behind for a penalty kick. Lewis stepped up to take the kick and hit the ball just over the bar.
It was all Llangoed now and the pressure was relentless when Joseph played a ball from deep up the wing to Matthew who played an excellent ball through to Kieron. Kieron slipped the ball across the face of goal to Aaron who tapped the ball over the line to make it 4-0 to Llangoed. The next goal went to new signing Thomas Zalot who had been doing sterling work on the wing all morning and whose efforts today were justly rewarded. The ball was chipped in by Aaron and volleyed by Tom into the back of the net to give Llangoed a 5-0 lead.
Amlwch grabbed a goal minutes later when their pacy number 12, Corben flicked the ball off his heel and past Shaun to give them some consolation.
But Llangoed weren’t finished yet and Kieran rounded off the morning with a stunning 40 yard strike that dipped awkwardly in front of the Amlwch goalkeeper before slipping past him into the back of the net. Final score was 6-1 to Llangoed in our biggest win of the season so far. Next week is the 3rd game of the Jimmy Lawlor against Llanfair Llewod at home. Kick off 10.30am.
