Llangoed welcomed rivals CPD Llangefni on a breezy and overcast September morning for the league opener. The new look Llangefni team boasted a couple fo new signings from last year’s title winning CPD Amlwch side. The game kicked off and was the usual slow start from Llangoed with some scrappy play from both sides with Llangefni getting some of the better chances early on. Llangoed broke the deadlock on the 13 minute mark when Cai laid in a cross from deep left which Kieran met on the half-volley to make it 1-0 to Llangoed. There have been some epic matches between Llangefni and Llangoed over the past 3 seasons and this was no different with Llangefni coming back stronger. They came close several times, being denied by some excellent defending and a couple of top-drawer saves from Shaun. It was Llangoed who added to their lead when a through ball from Sam found Cai who collected neatly, skipped past of couple of tackles before calmly rounding the Llangefni keeper and slotting home into the open net. Llangoed were down to 10 men 2 minutes later when a Llangoed forward retaliated and kicked out at a Llangefni player only to be shown a straight red in what looked to be a very harsh decision. Llangefni were putting pressure on now and a foul by Lewis on the edge of the box gave Llangefni captain Ethan a chance which was saved by Shaun at his far post. Llangefni scored from the resulting corner when the ball was clipped in by James to make it 2-1 going in ot half time.
The second half kicked off and almost immediately saw Nathaniel, who had been a massive headache for the Llangefni defence so far, collect a through ball before weaving his way through the defence and shooting hard and low to make it 3-1 Llangoed. The lads were well drilled and playing much more compactly at the back which led to Llangefni beign forced to shoot from distance. There were a couple of gut wrenching moments, most notably from a good passage of play from Llangefni where the ball was passed quickly through finding the Llangefni forward with only the keeper to beat when Matthew slid in to block at the last second. There were other chances at both ends, with Lewis clearing off the line and Nathaniel seeing his shot bounce back off the post. In the end though, it was Llangoed who came out eventual winners. Good luck to Llangefni who play Cemaes Bay next weekend. For us it is a trip to Amlwch to play CPD.
