Scorers for Llangoed were; Cai Jones (3), Jay Finter, Ross Anglesea
Man of the Match was Cai Jones.
Llangoed travelled to Holyhead on the best morning for weeks. It was colds but dry and the Holyhead pitch was in pretty good condition. The referee for the day was Michael Bentley. Shaun was the Llangoed captain today and after winning the coin toss he elected to swap ends. Holyhead kicked off and Llangoed immediately pressed, winning the ball and attacking the Holyhead goal. Several attacks were stopped by a lack of concentration in the Llangoed strikers allowing themselves to be drawn offside. Holyhead gradually got back into the game and it was pretty evenly matched when a poor defensive clearance by Llangoed fell to a Holyhead strioker who hit a sweet shot from the edge of the area whch dipped over Shaun and into the net to make it 1-0 to Holyhead. Holyhead could have added a second a few minutes later when a corner was fired into the Llangoed box and missed everyone, bouncing along the goalline before being cleared. It was still end to end stuff and Matthew came close a minute later with a right footed strike which sailed inches wide. Jacob Evans was making good progress down the right wing and he neatly turned a player on the 28 minute mark before finding Matthew who chipped the ball across the face of goal where Cai couldn’t quite get to it and out for a goal kick.
Llangoed got their reward for a good passage of pressure play when Cai’s shot was dropped by Harry Rees and Cai managed to get to it first and poke it through and then into the back of the net. 1-1 just as the ref blew for half time.
The second half kicked off and within 2 minutes, Holyhead had restored their lead when they passed their way through the Llangoed defence who were caught napping and fired the ball low past Shaun to make it 2-1. Holyhead were playing with more purpose and looked a massive improvement on the side we played at the start of the season. 51 minutes in, and a poor Holyhead clearance fell to Jay Finter who shot low and hard across the face of goal finding the bottom right hand corner of the net and making it 2-2. Llangoed were fired up and reenergised and they took the lead for the first time when Ross, slipped a tackle and stayed on his feet to hit the ball past the stricken Holyhead keeper to make it 3-2. It was 4-2 on the 65 minute mark when Cai hit a 40 yard lob which sailed over the keeper and into the net. Holyhead weren’t finished however and when their substituted keeper Harry (now playing in attack) was brought down in a very obvious way by a Llangoed defender, the referee had no choice other than award Holyhead a penalty which Harry duly converted to put Holyhead firmly back in the match at 4-3 with five minute remaining. It was a penalty down at the other end a couple of minutes later when a Llangoed attacker was brought down from behind. Cai stepped up to slot the resulting penalty home and make it 5-3 to Llangoed just as the referee blew for full time. Well done lads, it was a closely fought game and Holyhead were good opponents who never gave up. It was a close run thing man of the match award this week with several players having very good games, most notably Alfie who was outstanding and commanding presence in defence today. But the award this week goes to Cai Jones who scored a hat trick and improved throughout the match and had an outstanding second half performance.
